Description
From its founding in 1874 the story of the architectural firm of Leigh & Orange (L&O) has been charged with the energy and dynamism of its home – Hong Kong, China. Riding successive economic booms L&O created icons of Hong Kong such as the Main Building of the University of Hong Kong (1913), Christ Church in Kowloon Tong (1938), the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong in Central (1963), Ocean Park (1977) and Science Park Ph 2 near Shatin (2007).
Then the astounding development of mainland China from the 1980s opened up a new world of opportunities. Working with bold clients, the firm realised innovative and daring projects including Dong Fang amusement park (1987) in Guangzhou, Beijings UHN International Village (2003) and the still under construction Future Times city district in Shenzhen not to mention an extensive seam of work in nearby Macau. In parallel, world-class equine facilities such as the King Abdul Aziz Racetrack (2003) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Qatars Al Shaqab Academy (2010) rose to L&Os designs in the Middle East. Today the firm forges into the future with an emphasis on innovation and sustainability epitomised by the recently completed and multi-award winning Innocell hostel at Hong Kong Science Park.
The lively and accessible text explores the personalities, creativity and collaborations that have kept L&O at the forefront of Hong Kongs architectural scene for 150 years, while numerous historic and recent photos, plans and diagrams bring their buildings to life. This book will appeal to those interested in architecture, Hong Kong history, the recent development of China – and any user of L&Os buildings!
